This story starts when I was a restaurant manager during the day and a dedicated London restaurant, bar and night club “life researcher” during the night.
On the recommendation of another fellow researcher, who also happened to be a colleague – funny how dedicated this industry makes us all - we ended up in a cool bar in south London where he knew the barman or mixologist, as they were just starting to be called in those days. Throughout the evening of trials (bar the next day’s hangovers) with generous help of the said mixologist, we came up with a rather lethal mixture of spirits that tasted rather healthy and was appealing to both male and female clientele - well that is the male part that doesn’t have an issue being seen holding a martini glass.
In the years that followed, I ended up ordering this mixture from Barmen all over the world, despite them having a several hundred strong cocktail list.
Sometime in March this year, when the preparations for the launch party for The Rembrandt started, I asked Armenio Santoz, our bar manager, to put together a list of cocktails that were both easy to make and easy to drink – I already knew my drink would be making it, so was quite happy having some other ideas thrown in. I can not tell you of my surprise when Armenio supplied me with a very close version of my drink, just served with some ice and topped up with apple juice!!
Needless to say, both the versions have made it onto our cocktail menu and I can assure you I am not promoting the use of these labels – you are free to try other brands.
This is what works for me - a shot each of Absolut Citron, Archers and Midori - shaken vigorously with ice and strained into a Martini glass.
Drunk promptly, so it doesn’t get warm, on the rocks if a martini glass worries you, or with ice and some apple juice if Armenio is being asked – failing this you can always make up your own version and let me know!
Either way… you’ll be sure to enjoy this cocktail.
